How to Get Help For Finding a Biotechnology Job

The biotechnology sector is an expanding but poorly understood combination of science and technology, so finding a job in this field can be tricky. Fortunately, many science and technology companies are branching out into biotechnology fields, and online resources abound.

  • Start with a college career center or department adviser. Schools that have a biotechnology program will likely have someone on staff who can connect you with potential employers—even if you are not a student or recent graduate. Colleges will often offer lists of employers in a given field to entice potential students.
  • Look for technical branches of employment agencies, which sometimes work with biotechnology employers. If you express interest and have the qualifications, they might be able to find biotech jobs in your area.
  • Attend career fairs (if you are a student) or inquire at a biotechnology company to find out what employers are looking for. Since this is a growing but poorly understood field, most employers will enthusiastically answer your questions about how to get a job with them.
  • Do your homework. Research which companies in your target area employ workers in your chosen field. The Internet has an abundance of resources, including specialty job boards, where you can find information about possible jobs in biotechnology.
