Postdoc fellowship Cancer Biology 2012 in Germany

Description of the research group: The group “Animal Husbandry in the Tropics and Subtropics” aims at analyzing pastoral and agro-pastoral as well as urban livestock systems particularly in Africa and Asia. Thereby we focus on the optimization of resource use efficiency in the livestock unit as well as in the system as a whole. Research is primarily conducted at the farm to watershed scale and combines controlled on-station and on-farm experiments with GPS/GIS-based monitoring of resource use and participatory assessment of livestock keepers’ management strategies.

Tasks:
For the analysis of livestock-based resource use strategies across different farming systems, the successful candidate is expected to use already existing and develop new GIS-based approaches to model livestock-environment interactions, especially grazing itineraries. The focus of the work (interactions between livestock and vegetation; livestock and soil; livestock and water sources, at farm to watershed scale) will be identified jointly by the candidate and the members of the research group. Tasks will include the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation and communication/publication of GIS-based modelling approaches and their results. The candidate is expected to seek extramural funding, contribute to graduate education, and work effectively in an interdisciplinary and multinational research team.

Place of service is the University of Kassel at Witzenhausen with regular activities also at the University of Göttingen; short-term field work at sites of the group’s field research in Africa and Asia will be required.

Profile of the candidate:
PhD degree in animal sciences, agriculture, geosciences or closely related fields. The candidate should have work experience with GPS and in the GIS-based analysis of complex ecological, agricultural and livelihood systems of the Tropics and Subtropics. A profound knowledge in GIS-based bio-physical and/or bio-economic modeling and geo-statistics is therefore required.

We expect creativity in problem solving, integrative skills, team spirit and dedication to science. Further requirements include the ability to work independently under field conditions with little infrastructure and harsh climate, and good English (possibly also French) oral and writing skills.

How to apply:
Applicants should send a cover letter and curriculum vitae, including relevant supporting documents to the President of the University of Kassel (see below). Inquiries about the position may be directed to Prof. Dr. Eva Schlecht (schlecht@uni-kassel.de).
