About the project: India has one of the extended coastal ecosystems and being one of the mega diversity hot spots, abounds in biodiversity. The members of the phylum Spirochetes are an important group of bacteria which are free living in association as symbionts or most important pathogens. The present project for the first time primarily aims in cataloging the rich diversity of free living spirochetes of marine habitats of India through culture dependent and independent (metagenomics) approaches using pyrosequencing technology. In addition, the work involves studies on bioprospecting the metabolites produced by the spirochetes and the identification of biomolecules using polychem analysis. The research work involves an inter-disciplinary approach involving biology and chemistry which helps the candidate to be trained in the upcoming areas of metagenomics/metabolomics coupled to bioprospecting. Selected candidates are expected to register for Ph.D.
