Director Position - European Institute of Chemistry and Biology - France - March 2012

The European Institute of Chemistry and Biology is seeking an outstanding tenure-track or tenure-eligible researcher to lead the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology, near Bordeaux, France.

The European Institute of Chemistry and Biology is a research team incubator placed under the joint authority of the University of Bordeaux, CNRS and INSERM. It is located on the University of Bordeaux campus, in the Southwest of France. The institute houses state-of-the-art facilities and has a lively, highly international atmosphere, with 15 research groups working at the interface of chemistry and biology in a new building (6500 sq meters). The scientific policy of the institute is under the responsibility of an International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB), in charge of the selection of new group leaders. Teams are hosted for up to ten years with periodic evaluation by the ISAB. IECB staff members have a strong publication record, including recent contributions to high impact journals such as Nature, Science and PNAS.

About the role:

  • The candidate should be an outstanding scholar with an excellent track record and a solid professional experience;
  • He/she will provide strong leadership in research and international recognition for research in chemistry or biology;
  • The position includes the possibility to set up and develop his/her own research group, with an emphasis on research at the biology-chemistry interface preferably with potential developments in biomedicine;
  • Administrative experience in leading an academic department or institute would be an advantage;
  • The director is expected to generate strong research programmes, secure external funding, promote technology transfer and provide intellectual leadership of a world-class institute;
  • The candidate is also expected to further develop the existing ties between IECB and local institutes and technical platforms as well as the international cooperation;
  • A fair knowledge of the French public research organizations would be a plus;
  • Specialisations: Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical and Physiology, Chemical Engineering, Genetics and Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Pharmaceutical, Toxicology.
