USA 2012 - Postdoctoral fellowship marine science, microbiology

We are currently seeking a highly qualified researcher working with Dr. Adam Martiny to study the biogeochemical role of marine bacteria using flow cytometry and cell sorting. The candidate will participate in a large collaborative project between researchers at Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science, Princeton, WHOI, UCSD, and UCI. The goal of this project is to understand how marine bacterial biodiversity regulates the elemental composition of the ocean. To do this, we are combining field observations, genomics, laboratory experiments, and mathematical modeling.
Responsibilities:
The candidate will lead one or more independent research projects studying physiology, genetic variation, or biogeochemical role of marine bacteria in the field using flow cytometry and cell-sorting within the framework of this larger collaboration. There will also be opportunities for participating in research cruises and visiting collaborating institutions. In addition to this research, the candidate will be responsible for maintaining an InFlux cell-sorter and train and supervise technicians, master students and PhD students using the equipment.
There will be ample opportunity for collaborations if desired.
Requirements:
We are looking for a researcher with experience in flow cytometry or other advanced instruments and a general interest in phytoplankton. Suitable candidates would have a PhD in marine science, microbiology, or a related field. Strong communication skills are essential for this interdisciplinary project; it is expected that the candidate will write articles and give oral presentations about the results of their research.
We Offer:
Salary is commensurate with experience and will follow university guidelines. Review of applications will begin on March 1st, 2012 and continue until the position is filled. The position is for 12 months with the possibility of extending employment for up to two extra years.
How to Apply:
