Bioinformatics Analyst Job Vacancy - USA

The University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) is inviting applications for two full time bioinformatics analysts to join its expanding bioinformatics program and support interdisciplinary research in the life sciences.  As part of the Research Informatics Support Systems (RISS) program, the informatics analysts will be working within a rich computational and research environment offered by the MSI and the University.
Successful candidates will have excellent communication skills, a strong analytical/computational background combined with demonstrated life sciences data analysis experience, be highly organized, and comfortable working as part of an interdisciplinary research team on multiple projects.  Experience with Next-Gen Sequencing applications and data analysis is a priority. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent.  Very competitive salary and benefits are offered.
Working closely with the investigators, the analyst will identify the research goals and analytical support needs, design the appropriate informatics strategies and carry-out the analysis, developing and prototyping the appropriate analytical pipeline solutions.  Supporting leading-edge research, the analysts will also identify and evaluate resources that are of benefits to the U of M life-sciences research community.
The ideal candidates will have advanced knowledge of next generation sequencing technologies with demonstrated practical experience in developing and carrying out analytical strategies in the context of NGS applications (e.g. RNAseq, ChIPseq, metagenomics, GWAS, de novo sequencing).
Job Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Doctorate (or equivalent experience) in the life sciences with significant programming experience or Doctorate in physical, engineering or computational sciences with experience in biological research or biological research problems
• 3-6 years of experience in the life sciences as primary or secondary research field
• Hands on experience in developing and carrying out data analytical strategies and pipelines in the context of genomics.
•Experience in handling and analyzing large data sets from high-throughput platforms such as Next-Generation-Sequencing is a must.
• Must be able to understand and translate life scientist researchers' scientific goals into analytical strategies and process requirements.
• Must be able to function as part of an interactive team while demonstrating self-initiative to achieve project's goals and group's mission.
•Excellent oral and written English communication and inter-personal skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
•Research background in computational biology, genomics, genetics or statistical genetics
•Experience with Next Generation Sequencing genomics research applications, data analysis and data management
•Strong general computational and programming skills (Perl, Python, Java, C/C++), database programming skills (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle) and competence with UNIX shell environment.
•Data modeling skills are a plus.
