PhD Scholarship in Bioengineering - Switzerland

The Safety & Environmental Technology Group at the Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering offers a
PhD position in "Bio-refinery modeling, assessment and optimization in an integrated computer-aided platform”
The goal of the project is to develop a computer-aided platform to perform systematic process design for the synthesis chains of wood into marketable chemical products and energy services. This advanced decision support platform will be based on the development of a database comprising process models and multi-criteria performance indicators (i.e., thermo-economic, life-cycle assessment and hazard related indicators). It will also utilize process systems engineering methods (i.e., process integration and multi-objective optimization techniques) to systematically generate process alternatives and propose optimal solutions. The platform will be validated in case studies developed with industrial partners. This PhD project is part of a collaborative project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The PhD project in S will focus on the development, environmental and economic assessment of the process models for the wood conversion chains, which will be integrated, together with process systems engineering approaches, in the computer-aided platform. The integration will be performed in collaboration with our academic partners in Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
Your background will be a Master’s degree (or equivalent) with excellent academic results in (bio)chemical and/or process systems engineering. Furthermore, good theoretical knowledge and practical experience in some of the following aspects will be considered as a valuable asset:
• Bioprocess modeling (i.e., including upstream/downstream separation methods)
• Process design and assessment tools (i.e., estimation of material and energy flows, equipment sizing and costing, etc.)
• Process hazard and environmental assessment (e.g., SHE, LCA etc.)
• Commercial process modeling (e.g. ASPEN Plus, ASPEN Custom Modeler, gPROMS) and optimization (Matlab/Tomlab, GAMS etc.) platforms.
Start date: first half of 2012.
